Alex Tay is a composer based in London (UK).
Tayβs music β described as βwildly inventive and rivetingβ (Osborn) and βoverflowing with beauty and poignancyβ (Ko) β distils the overwhelm of existence with its pace, hyperactivity and illusions. Teachers and collaborators include Professor Julian Anderson CBE, Malcolm Singer, Colin Matthews, Christian Mason, FranΓ§ois Xavier-Roth, the London Symphony Orchestra (Panufnik 2018 - 19), Brett Dean, Jack Sheen, the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO Young Composersβ Scheme 2021 - 22), Britten Sinfonia, Royal Northern Sinfonia, National Youth Choir, Ben Parry, Emily Dickens, Kerry Andrew (National Youth Choir Young Composersβ Scheme), Robin Holloway, Richard Causton (Kings and Churchill College Cambridge), Judith Weir and the Heath Quartet (Dartington). Most recently NMC Recordings has released 2 tracks recorded by the National Youth Choir, DEEP (HUH?!) and RainFlowβrs, which are available on streaming platforms. Most recently Alex curated a showcase at the Wigmore Hall with Exaudi and GBSR Duo. The concert featured commissions from Cassie Kinoshi, Joe Bates and Linda Catlin Smith which Alex raised funds for. His own commission, made by Wigmore as part of their Lockdown Commissions Scheme, imagined ex-Zappos CEO Tony Hsiehβs death told as a surreal first-person narration. His next engagement is at Snape Maltings as a Britten-Pears Young Artist, where his piece britmod, for Mezzo-Soprano and 14 players will be premiered by Jonathan Berman and the Britten Pears Contemporary Ensemble.
